The 1803 House, also known as the Jacob Ehrenhardt Jr. House, is a historic home in Emmaus, Pennsylvania. It was built in the year 1803. The house was made for Jacob Ehrenhardt Jr., whose father helped start the town.

History of the 1803 House

The 1803 House was built in 1803. It is a two-and-a-half-story house made from fieldstone. This means it was built using stones found in fields. The house has a special design called Federal architecture. This style was popular in the United States after the American Revolution.

Who Lived Here?

The house was built for Jacob Ehrenhardt Jr. His father, Jacob Ehrenhardt Sr., was one of the people who founded Emmaus. Emmaus began in 1747 as a settlement for the Moravian Church.

Jacob Ehrenhardt Jr. was a soldier. He served in the Northampton County militia in 1782. This was during the American Revolutionary War. He was briefly not part of the Moravian Church because he served in the military. Later, he was welcomed back into the church. Jacob Jr. worked as a shoemaker, a farmer, and a tavern keeper.

House Features and Restoration

The 1803 House has a kitchen wing at the back. This part of the house is one-and-a-half stories tall. The roof of the house is covered with slate.

People lived in the house until the 1950s. In the 1980s, the house was carefully restored. This means it was repaired and brought back to how it looked long ago. Today, it is a historic house museum. This means visitors can tour it and learn about its past. During the restoration, furniture was put back into the correct rooms.

In 2003, the 1803 House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historic places in the United States. It shows that the house is very special and worth preserving.
