What the Story is About
The Art Lesson tells a story that is a lot like parts of Tomie DePaola's own childhood. The main character is a boy named Tommy. He absolutely loves to paint and draw.
Tommy draws everywhere! He makes pictures for his family. He also draws on the sidewalk, on bedsheets, and even on the walls. For his birthday, he gets a big box of 64 crayons.
When Tommy starts first grade, he meets his new teacher. She doesn't like his personal crayons. She makes him draw the same picture as everyone else. He also has to use only a few school crayons. And he gets just one piece of paper.
Tommy then makes a special deal with the school's Art Teacher. He agrees to use one page for the class drawing. For that, he will use the school crayons. But for a second page, he gets to use his own crayons. He can also draw his own amazing art.
