The Beach Club is a special private club located right by the ocean in Rye, New Hampshire. You can find it at 2450 Ocean Boulevard. This club started in 1925 and is the only private beach club from the early 1900s that is still around on New Hampshire's coast. Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
Discovering The Beach Club's History
The Beach Club has four main buildings grouped around a saltwater swimming pool. These buildings are right on the beach, close to where Ocean Boulevard (New Hampshire Route 1A) meets Sea Road.
What Does The Beach Club Look Like?
The main clubhouse faces south and is a one-story building. It was built with wood and has a simple, older style. A stone part was added to its east side later. The wooden part has five sections, with a covered entrance in the middle. The stone part has two sections and a chimney that stands out in the front. Inside the clubhouse, you can see the wooden beams. The kitchen and other service areas are in newer parts added to the back.
Around the saltwater pool, there are three bathhouses. These buildings have changing rooms and store equipment for the pool. On the east side of the pool, there is a covered area that is like a cabana. From here, you can enjoy great views of the ocean.
How The Beach Club Began
The main clubhouse was built around 1882. It has been changed many times since then. At first, it was open to all visitors in the area. The oldest bathhouse was built around 1900 as part of this business.
In 1925, the club became a private place. It was a popular spot for important people from New Hampshire and Massachusetts. These members felt that their summer vacation area was becoming too crowded with many different kinds of visitors. They wanted a more exclusive place to relax.
Important leaders of the club included Alvan T. Fuller, who was the Governor of Massachusetts. He had a summer home nearby. The swimming pool was first built by the club in 1927. It was replaced in 2007 with a new one. The new pool even has special underwater lights, just like the original pool did!
