The Beggar Queen (published in 1984) is an exciting fantasy novel by American writer Lloyd Alexander. It is the final book in a series often called the Westmark trilogy. This series tells stories that feel like they are from the 18th century, but in a made-up kingdom. It's a bit like a historical adventure, but with magical elements.

The Story of The Beggar Queen

The story begins with Mickle, who used to be a simple street kid. Now, she is the queen of Westmark. Her kingdom seems to be doing well. However, there is a strange feeling of unrest among the people. Old problems and dangers from the past are still around.

The Return of Cabbarus

The evil minister, Cabbarus, was once sent away from Westmark. But now he is back. He is secretly planning to take over the throne and rule the kingdom himself. This creates a big problem for Queen Mickle and her friends.

Theo's New Fight

Theo remembers when he was known as the Kestrel. He fought many battles that were very difficult. These fights made him question himself. Now, Theo must join the struggle once again. He has to help protect Westmark from Cabbarus.

The Power of the People

A big part of the story is about the common people of Westmark. They are mostly ordinary citizens. But in the end, they rise up together. Their actions make it possible to finally defeat Cabbarus. This shows how important everyone can be.

Tough Choices and Consequences

The book makes readers think about important questions. It explores the choices people make. It also looks at what happens when someone has a lot of power. The story shows that sometimes, even good people feel they must do difficult things in a war. Theo tries to stay out of the fighting. But he finds he cannot avoid it. He even vows to kill Cabbarus. (Theo had actually saved Cabbarus's life in Westmark, the first book.)

The End of the Adventure

By the end of the story, many characters have died, including Cabbarus. But Theo is not the one who kills him. A new government starts to form. This government is led by a group of common people.

In one of her last acts as queen, Mickle announces that she and Theo are married. She realizes that they cannot stay in Westmark. So, as the book finishes, Mickle and Theo leave. They plan to travel the world with their old friends, Las Bombas and Musket.
