The Blauzes facts for kids
The Blauzes are two small islands located in New York City's City Island Harbor. These unique islands are part of a reef that stretches out about 600 yards northwest from the northern tip of Hart Island. They are made of a type of rock called Manhattan schist, which has a slightly bluish color. The islands themselves are shaped like half-spheres.
The name "Blauzes" comes from Belgian French and means "Little Blue Ones." This name was given by the Belgian Huguenots, who were among the first Europeans to settle in this area. Because of their distinct, rounded shape, local residents sometimes have a playful nickname for them that describes their unusual appearance in the harbor.
The Blauzes are also part of a larger group of islands known as the Pelham Islands.
