The Blue Bottle coffee house was one of the very first places to serve coffee in Vienna, Austria. It opened its doors in 1686. This famous coffee house was started by a Polish-Ukrainian hero named Jerzy Franciszek Kulczycki. He was known for his bravery during the Battle of Vienna.

The Story of Vienna's First Coffee House

Many people believe that The Blue Bottle was the very first coffee house in Vienna. The story says that after the Ottoman Turks attacked Vienna, they left behind many sacks of dark beans. No one knew what these beans were, except for Kulczycki! He realized they were coffee beans. He then used these special beans to open his coffee house.

However, newer studies suggest that Vienna's first coffee house actually opened in 1685. This was one year before The Blue Bottle. It seems that some of the exciting stories about Kulczycki were made up later by a writer named Gottfried Uhlich in 1783. Even so, The Blue Bottle remains an important part of Vienna's history.

A Name That Lives On

Today, the name "Blue Bottle" is still used. A modern company called the Blue Bottle Coffee Company chose this name to honor the old Vienna coffee house. This company roasts coffee and has many coffee shops. They are based in Oakland, California, in the United States.
