The Bluff is the highest point in the Cayman Islands. These islands are a British Overseas Territory located in the warm Caribbean Sea. The Bluff is found on the eastern side of Cayman Brac island. It reaches a height of about 43 meters (141 feet) above sea level.

Exploring The Bluff

The Bluff is a flat, raised area of land called a plateau. It is made of a special type of rock called limestone. This limestone has been shaped over time by water, creating unique features. The land gently rises as you move towards the eastern end of Cayman Brac.

A Special Forest Home

Much of The Bluff is covered by a rich and varied dry forest. This forest is home to many different kinds of trees. Some common trees you might see include Cedrela odorata, Sideroxylon salicifolium, Exothea paniculata, Chionanthus caymanensis, and Bursera simaruba.

For a long time, people used to cut down trees in this forest. Because of this, the forest now has a mix of very old trees and newer trees that have grown back. It's like a patchwork of different ages of trees.

Home to Amazing Birds

The forest on The Bluff is very important for birds. An organization called BirdLife International has named about 473 hectares (about 1,169 acres) of this area the Bluff Forest Important Bird Area (IBA). An IBA is a place that is vital for bird populations.

This area is a safe haven for many birds. You can find large numbers of white-crowned pigeons, Cuban amazon parrots, Caribbean elaenias, thick-billed vireos, and vitelline warblers here.

Protecting the Parrots

Inside the Important Bird Area, there is a special place called the Brac Parrot Reserve. This reserve covers about 82 hectares (about 203 acres). It is managed by the National Trust for the Cayman Islands.

The main goal of this reserve is to protect the Cuban amazon parrots. It keeps mature trees and even dead standing trees safe. These trees are very important because the parrots use them for nesting and raising their young.
