Discovering The Briggait's Past
The Briggait building has a long and interesting history. For over 100 years, it was Glasgow's main fish market. Imagine all the fresh fish being sold there every day! This continued until the late 1970s.
From Fish Market to Shops
After its time as a fish market, the building changed. In the 1980s, it was turned into a shopping centre. However, this new use didn't last very long. It was only a temporary idea for the space.
The Briggait Today: A Home for Artists
In the 21st century, The Briggait found a new purpose. It was transformed into studios for artists. This means creative people now have a place to work and make amazing art. The artist studios opened to the public in August 2010.
Restoring the Historic Steeple
One of the most interesting parts of The Briggait is its steeple. This tall, pointed tower is even older than the main building. It dates all the way back to 1665! This historic steeple has been carefully restored, so it looks great for everyone to see today.
