The Deep is an exciting children's novel. It was written by the English author Helen Dunmore. The book was published in 2007. It is the third book in the popular Ingo tetralogy series. It comes after Ingo and The Tide Knot. The next book in the series is The Crossing of Ingo.

Story Summary

A huge flood has hit both the human world (called Air) and the underwater world of Ingo. Now, a scary monster called the Kraken is waking up deep in the ocean. Old stories from the Mer people say that only those who are half-Mer and half-human can stop this creature.

Sapphire knows she must go back to The Deep to face this monster. Her friend, a friendly whale, will help her. Her brother Conor and her Mer friend Faro insist on going with her. Mer people who are pure Mer cannot go into The Deep.

The Kraken Awakens

Sapphire is now living back in her cottage by the sea. She visits Ingo all the time. One day, the Mer people call a special meeting. Sapphire learns that the Kraken has woken up. This creature has the power to destroy their whole world.

Sapphire makes a deal with the Mer. If she and Conor help put the Kraken back to sleep, their father will get to choose if he wants to leave Ingo. Ervys, a Mer who acts like a leader, is very angry about this deal. However, he agrees to it to keep the Mer people safe.

Journey to The Deep

Sapphire, Conor, and Faro prepare for their journey. Faro should not be able to go to The Deep. But in a special mirror, he sees that he is part human. This means he can join them. The same whale that saved Sapphire before helps them. They go into The Deep to find the Kraken. Their goal is to make it sleep again.

The book does not fully explain what the Kraken really is. But it is clear that it can change its shape. After a battle of minds, Sapphire manages to make the Kraken sleep. She, Conor, and Faro then return to the Mer people. They share the good news.

After the Battle

Ervys is still very angry. Faro then asks Sapphire to make the "crossing of Ingo" with him. This is a special journey. Sapphire agrees, but only if Conor can come too. Faro then says his sister, Elvira, must also go. Sapphire does not want Elvira and Conor to be together, but she agrees.

When Sapphire and Conor go home, they get a shock. Their mother and her boyfriend, Roger, tell them they are all moving to Australia for three months. Sapphire talks to her friend Rainbow and Granny Carne. She then tells Conor she does not want to leave. They tell their mother and Roger that they will not go. Jennie and Roger sadly decide to go without them.

The final part of the book shows Faro and Sapphire making "Deublek." These are special friendship bracelets made from their hair.
