The Devil's Tree facts for kids
The Devil's Tree is a single oak tree. It grows in an open field in Martinsville, which is part of Bernards Township in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States. Local legends say the tree is cursed. People believe that if you damage or disrespect the tree, something bad will happen to you. This often means getting into a car accident or having your car break down right after you leave the area.
Spooky Stories and Legends
Many spooky stories are told about the Devil's Tree. Some legends claim that if you get too close to the tree, a black Ford pick-up truck will chase you. This truck is said to then disappear suddenly at a certain spot. Another story says that if you touch the tree, your hands will turn black if you try to eat at a restaurant.
People also talk about the ground around the tree. In winter, the ground right under the tree is supposedly free of snow. This is true no matter how much snow has fallen. There is also a large boulder nearby called "Heat Rock." Some people say this rock, and sometimes the tree itself, feels warm to touch. This is said to be true no matter the season or time of day. Some legends even claim that the rock is a portal to another, darker place.
Protecting the Tree
The area where the Devil's Tree stands was once planned for new buildings. This might have meant removing the tree. However, the township decided to protect the tree instead. They wanted to keep it safe and untouched. In 2007, a sign was put up at the site. It tells people when the area is open to the public. A chain-link fence was also put around the Devil's Tree. This was done to protect it from people who might try to damage it.
