Who Were The Girls?
The band "The Girls" was made up of four sisters from the Sandoval family. They were Rosemary, who played the lead guitar, and Diane, who played the rhythm guitar. Sylvia played the bass guitar, and Margaret played the drums while also singing the main vocals. It was rare to see an all-female band playing their own instruments back then!
Starting Their Musical Journey
Before they became known as "The Girls," the sisters tried out a few other names. They were first called "The Sandoval Sisters" and later "The Moonmaids." In 1964, they even recorded some songs as 'The Four Queens' for Teron Records. Their songs included "A Cinder In My Eye" and "The Boy Next Door."
In 1965, they officially became "The Girls." This was a big year for them because they signed a recording contract with Capitol Records. A recording contract is like a special agreement with a music company that helps a band make and sell their songs.
Making Music and Touring
"The Girls" released two singles (which are songs released on their own, usually with another song on the back) with Capitol Records. One of their well-known songs was "Chico's Girl." This song was originally written by famous songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.
The band also traveled far from home to perform! They went on a tour to the Far East, which is a part of Asia. During this trip, they performed for people serving in the military in places like Vietnam. It was a big adventure for them to share their music with audiences so far away.
Their Legacy in Music
Even though "The Girls" only released a few songs, their music is still remembered. Their song "Chico's Girl" was included on a special music collection called a compilation album in 2009. This album was titled The Shangri-Las & The '60s Girl Group Garage Sound. A compilation album brings together songs from different artists, often from a specific time period or style. This shows that "The Girls" were an important part of the music scene in the 1960s!
