The Grove is a special area in Saginaw, Michigan. It has many old homes and important buildings. This historic district is found along South Washington Street. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it's a place recognized for its important history.

What is the History of The Grove?

The Grove area started to grow in the 1870s. During this time, several homes were built. These first houses were in the northern part of the district.

More buildings began to appear around 1908. This happened after improvements like dredging made the land more appealing. The city's waterworks was built in 1929. It is located at one end of the district.

Later, in 1936, the City Hall was added. It was built at the opposite end of the district. Because City Hall was there, some large homes were bought by the city. They were turned into city offices. Other homes became private business offices.

The Grove originally had 18 main buildings. Seventeen of these buildings help show the district's history. Much of the land belongs to the city. This includes the large City Hall and waterworks buildings.

The Holy Family Catholic Church also owns land here. It is located near the northern part of the district. The other buildings were once private homes. Most of these homes are now used for other things.

These homes were built in different styles. Some examples include Italianate and Georgian Revival. You can also see the Shingle style.

Famous Houses in The Grove

Two of the most famous houses are the T.B. Corning House and the Montague House. The Corning House was built in 1872. It was for T.B. Corning, who was rich from salt and building boats. It is an Italianate house made of light brown brick. It has a special roof and a central tower.

The Montague House was built later, in 1928. It is a large, three-story home. It was built in the Georgian Revival style.
