The Higher Power of Lucky is a children's novel written by Susan Patron. It was illustrated by Matt Phelan. This book was released in 2006 by Simon & Schuster. It won the famous Newbery Medal in 2007, which is a big award for children's books.

About Lucky and Her Story

This story is about a 10-year-old girl named Lucky. She lives in a very small town called Hard Pan. This town is in the California desert and has only 43 people. Lucky has two good friends. One is Lincoln, who loves tying knots. His mom thinks he will be president one day. The other friend is Miles, a five-year-old. Miles's favorite book is "Are You My Mother?"

Lucky's Big Fear

Lucky's mother passed away two years ago in an accident involving electricity. After that, Lucky's father asked his former wife, Brigitte, to come from France. Brigitte came to the United States to take care of Lucky. Lucky worries that Brigitte is tired of living in Hard Pan. She also fears Brigitte is tired of being her guardian.

One day, Lucky sees Brigitte's suitcase and passport. They are left out in the open. Lucky becomes sure that Brigitte will leave her. She thinks Brigitte will go back to France. This makes Lucky very anxious. She decides to look for help from her "Higher Power." She heard about this idea from listening to meetings in her town. These meetings are where people talk about their problems and help each other.

The Sandstorm Adventure

Lucky finds three "signs" that tell her to leave. So, she runs away with her dog, HMS Beagle. A big sandstorm is happening outside. But then, she finds Miles, her young friend. He is lost and hurt in the storm. Lucky takes Miles with her. They find shelter in some dugouts near an old mine. They wait there for the storm to pass.

Soon, Lincoln joins them. He tells them that everyone in town is looking for them. He says the townspeople will be there very soon. Before leaving the dugouts, Lucky does something special. She scatters her mother's ashes into the wind. This is a quiet memorial service with the townspeople.

A Happy Ending

Brigitte takes Lucky home. She explains the papers Lucky found in her suitcase. These papers were actually for Brigitte to legally adopt Lucky. This means Brigitte wanted to become Lucky's official parent. Brigitte also shares her plans. She wants to open a restaurant in Hard Pan. This shows Lucky that Brigitte truly wants to stay with her.
