Wright described the proposed structure with floor plans of the “base”, 320th, and 528th (highest) floors.

The Mile High Illinois, also called Illinois Sky-City or simply The Illinois, was a super tall building that was planned but never built. Famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright first talked about this idea in his 1956 book, A Testament.

What Was The Illinois?

This amazing building was meant to be built in Chicago. It would have been 1 mile (about 1,600 meters) tall! That's incredibly high. The design included 528 floors and covered a huge area of 1,715,000 square meters. Wright even said it would have parking for 15,000 cars and space for 150 helicopters to land.

A Giant Idea

If The Illinois had been built, it would have been the tallest building in the world by a very long way. It would have been more than four times taller than the Empire State Building, which was the tallest building at that time. Even today, it would be almost twice as tall as the Burj Khalifa, which is currently the world's tallest building.

The idea behind The Illinois was to create a huge city in one building. This was meant to be an answer to "urban sprawl", which is when cities spread out too much. Many architects had similar big ideas, but none of these super-tall buildings have ever been built because they would cost too much money.

Interestingly, the design of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world right now, is said to have been inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's design for The Illinois.
