What Is This Book About?
This exciting book tells the story of three siblings, Ben, Tom, and Melinda Potter. Melinda is usually called Lindy. They meet a mysterious person named Professor Savant. This meeting happens one rainy day while they are visiting the zoo.
How Do the Children Meet the Professor?
On Halloween night, Lindy's brother dares her to knock on the scariest house in their neighborhood. He offers her a quarter if she does it. It turns out this spooky house belongs to Professor Savant! This is how the three children get to know him better.
After their first meeting, they start spending more time at the Professor's house. He teaches them special games. These games help them focus and observe things very carefully. The Professor then shares a big secret with them.
Discovering Whangdoodleland
The Professor tells the children about a magical place called Whangdoodleland. This land can only be reached by using your imagination. He explains that he is training them to go there with him.
Whangdoodleland is the special home of the very last Whangdoodle in the world. Long ago, Whangdoodles and other creatures that we now think are imaginary lived in our world. But people started to lose their imaginations. They became too focused on power and wanting things.
So, the Whangdoodle created a peaceful and magical world. He became the ruler of this new land. The Professor and the children get to explore this amazing place together.
Adventures in Whangdoodleland
Each time the children visit Whangdoodleland, they travel further into it. Their goal is to reach the palace where the Last Whangdoodle lives. However, the Whangdoodle's main helper, the "Oily Prock," does not want them to bother His Highness.
The Oily Prock sets up many tricky traps. He places these traps both in Whangdoodleland and in the real world. He wants to stop the children from meeting the Whangdoodle. He even gets help from the funny and wonderful creatures of the land.
Who Are the Creatures of Whangdoodleland?
Some of the creatures helping the Oily Prock include:
- The High Behind Splintercat
- The Sidewinders
- The Oinck
- The Gazooks
- The Tree Squeaks
- The Swamp Gaboons
The children use their clever imaginations and intelligence to get past these traps. They also get help from a friendly creature called the Whiffle Bird. The Whiffle Bird becomes their friend and helps them outsmart the Oily Prock.
Meeting the Last Whangdoodle
Finally, the children succeed and meet the Last Whangdoodle! They learn that the Whangdoodle is lonely. He wants a female Whangdoodle to be his queen. Professor Savant has special knowledge and talents. He might be able to help the Whangdoodle find his queen. The big challenge is for the Professor to figure out exactly how to make it happen!
