The Story of Mor'du
The story starts with a witch inviting someone into her small house. Her crow thinks the guest wants a spell to turn into a bear. So, the witch begins to tell the tale of a man who became the fearsome bear, Mor'du.
This man was once the oldest of four sons. His father was a wise and much-loved king of an old kingdom. Each of the king's sons had a special gift. The youngest son was very smart. The third son was kind and caring. The second son was fair and just. The oldest son, however, was only strong. He thought being strong was the most important thing.
When the king passed away, he did not give everything to his oldest son. Instead, he divided the kingdom equally among all his sons. The king believed that if his sons worked together, their combined gifts would make the kingdom even stronger and more peaceful.
However, the oldest son felt insulted and became very greedy. He refused to accept the king's decision. He wanted to be the only ruler. To show his claim, he used an axe to break his image away from their family stone. His anger soon led to a terrible war, changing the kingdom forever.
The Prince's Quest for Power
Even though the prince had a strong army, he and his brothers kept fighting without anyone winning. The prince looked for a way to change his luck. He found a circle of tall stones in the woods. From there, magical glowing lights called will-o'-the-wisps led him to a dark lake. The witch's small house stood far from the shore.
The prince hoped to win the war. He convinced the witch to make a spell that would give him the strength of ten men. He offered her his special signet ring as payment. The witch gave him the spell in a drinking horn. But she had seen the darkness in his heart. She warned him that he would have a choice: either use the spell for his dark wish or heal the broken family bonds.
The Transformation
The prince tricked his brothers into meeting him, pretending he wanted peace. When they arrived, he again demanded to rule the kingdom alone. His brothers protested. In response, the prince drank the spell. It gave him the strength he wanted, but to his surprise, it also turned him into a huge black bear.
The spell could have been broken if he chose to fix the family problems caused by his pride. But the prince chose to keep his new bear form instead. He then attacked and killed his brothers. He tried to get his army to help him rule, but they saw him as a wild beast. They turned against him.
Mor'du's Reign of Terror
Furious, the prince, now a bear, attacked his former soldiers. He killed many of them. The few soldiers who survived fled the kingdom in fear. This led to the kingdom falling apart.
The prince was now stuck in his animal form because he wanted power more than family. He became known as the "Great Black" or "Mor'du." He wandered the land endlessly, killing and scaring everyone he met. His human thoughts and intelligence were replaced by a wild, animalistic desire for blood.
The witch finishes her story. She then offers the spell, now in the form of a cake, to her guest. The guest turns out to be Wee Dingwall. He panics, says he only came for water, and quickly runs out of the cottage.
