The Listening Room (also known as La Chambre d'Écoute) is a famous painting created in 1952 by the Belgian artist René Magritte. It's an oil on canvas painting, which means it was made using oil paints on a piece of canvas fabric. You can find this artwork today at the Menil Collection in Houston, Texas.
Magritte was known for his unique style called Surrealism. This art movement explored dreams, imagination, and unexpected combinations of everyday objects. Surrealist artists like Magritte wanted to make people think differently about the world around them.

What's Special About This Painting?
The Listening Room shows a giant green apple that completely fills a room. It's so big that it almost touches the ceiling and walls! This painting makes us wonder how an apple could ever be that large. It's a great example of how Magritte liked to play with size and reality.
Two Versions of the Painting
Magritte actually painted two versions of The Listening Room. The first one, from 1952, shows the huge apple in a room with a wooden floor and a glass window.
The second version, painted in 1958, is very similar but has some differences. In this later painting, the room has gray brick walls and an arched window that opens to the outside. Both paintings feature the same giant green apple.
Magritte's Favorite Themes
Magritte often used certain ideas in his art, and The Listening Room shows some of them.
Playing with Size
One of Magritte's favorite tricks was to change the size of objects. He would make small things huge or big things tiny. This makes his paintings feel dreamlike and a bit confusing, in a fun way!
- In Elective Affinities (1933), he painted a large egg filling a birdcage.
- The Tomb of the Wrestlers (1961) shows a giant red rose taking up an entire room.
- In Personal Values (1951–52), everyday items like a comb, a glass, and a bar of soap are much bigger than the furniture in a bedroom.
The Mysterious Apple
The apple was another common symbol in Magritte's art. He used it in many different ways to make people think.
- In The Son of Man (1964), a green apple hides the face of a man wearing a bowler hat.
- Another famous painting is This is not an Apple (1964). It shows an apple with the words "Ceci n'est pas une pomme" written below it. This means "This is not an apple" in French. Magritte wanted to show that a painting of an apple is not a real apple itself. It's just an image!
Where Else Has It Appeared?
The 1958 version of The Listening Room has been used in popular culture. It was featured on the album cover for Beck-Ola by The Jeff Beck Group, a famous rock band. It also appeared in the music video for "Heart Attack" by the K-pop artist Chuu.
