The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure is a super fun ride based on the 1989 Disney movie The Little Mermaid. You can find this exciting adventure at two different Disney parks. It's at Disney California Adventure in California, located in Paradise Gardens Park. The same ride is also at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Florida, in Fantasyland, where it's called Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid. The California ride opened on June 3, 2011, and the Florida one opened on December 6, 2012.

Dive into Ariel's Undersea World!

The outside of the ride building at Disney California Adventure looks like an old aquarium.

This ride takes you on a journey through the story of Ariel. You'll see many of your favorite characters and hear classic songs from the movie.

What the Ride Looks Like Outside

The outside of the ride is different at each park.

California Adventure's Aquarium Look

At Disney California Adventure, the building looks like a giant, old-fashioned aquarium. The entrance is a beautiful round building, like a fancy palace. You walk under covered walkways before going inside. The waiting area has a huge, colorful painting showing all the main characters from the story.

Magic Kingdom's Castle Entrance

The Magic Kingdom ride has a different look. It features Prince Eric's castle and rocky cliffs. You enter through a cave that looks like it's at low tide. While you wait, you can play an interactive game with Scuttle, the seagull! The painting in the loading area is also unique to this park.

Your Undersea Journey Begins!

On this ride, you'll sit in special vehicles that look like big, colorful clamshells.

Meeting Scuttle and Going Underwater

First, your clamshells go through a broken ship. Scuttle, the seagull, greets you and tries to tell Ariel's story in his own funny way. Then, your clamshells turn backward as you move along a beach. You then "go underwater" with cool projections and blasts of cold air. As you go deeper, you'll see rocky passages with seaweed and coral. In California, you might also spot clams, fish, seahorses, and starfish! Look up, and you might see Ariel and Flounder swimming above.

Ariel's Grotto and "Under the Sea" Party

The underwater path opens up to Ariel's secret grotto. Here, Ariel sings "Part of Your World" while surrounded by her collection of human treasures. Flounder swims nearby, and Sebastian pops up too. As Sebastian reminds Ariel how great it is under the sea, you'll see King Triton's castle far away. The scene then opens into a huge underwater garden. Sebastian leads many singing and dancing sea creatures in the famous song "Under the Sea"!

Ursula's Lair and the Big Trade

The happy celebration fades as Ursula's pet eels, Flotsam and Jetsam, welcome you to the sea witch's dark lair. Your clamshells pass into the mouth of a giant skeleton. Inside, you'll find Ursula singing "Poor, Unfortunate Souls." She stands by her crystal ball, surrounded by her collection of lost souls. Ahead, a bright swirling light surrounds Ariel as she trades her voice for human legs.

Life on Land and a Happy Ending

Your clamshells then rise through bubbles and splash onto the shore of a lagoon. Sebastian sings "Kiss the Girl" as Eric and Ariel sit in a boat, almost kissing. After leaving the lagoon, you pass by Prince Eric's castle. You'll see Ariel and Eric finally kiss! A golden light glows from Ariel's neck, showing she has her voice back. This light forms a heart around them as they kiss. You can also see the smoky shape of a giant, defeated Ursula in the distance.

The ride ends with a big celebration! King Triton, Sebastian, Flounder, and many sea creatures celebrate Ariel and Eric's wedding. The happy couple waves goodbye from a gazebo by the ocean. Fireworks light up the sky! As you leave the ride, Scuttle finishes his story, saying he's "not such a bird-brain after all!"

Music and Voices of the Ride

The music for the ride was created by Danny Troob, who took the original songs by Alan Menken and made them perfect for the attraction. He also wrote new music for the waiting area and for the transitions between scenes.

Some of the songs use the original voices from the movie. You'll hear Jodi Benson as Ariel and Pat Carroll as Ursula. There are also new voices for other characters, including Phillip Lawrence as Sebastian, Chris Edgerly as Scuttle, and Tress MacNeille as Flotsam and Jetsam.
