The "Little Rock" is a special stone that gave the city of Little Rock, Arkansas its name! It's a part of a larger rock formation that sticks out into the Arkansas River. You can find it on the south side of the river, right near the Junction Bridge. A bronze plaque is even attached to a part of the rock.
The Famous Little Rock
This rock was once much taller. Experts believe it rose about 18 feet (5.5 meters) above the river. Today, it's a bit smaller due to changes over time.
A Landmark Through History
The "Little Rock" was first noticed as an important river landmark in 1722. This was by a French explorer named Jean-Baptiste Bénard de la Harpe. He was exploring the area and saw how unique this rock was.
Mapping the Land
In 1818, the rock became even more important. It was used as a survey marker. This means it was a starting point for measuring and mapping land. All the land surveys south of the river began from this very rock.
A Protected Site
Because of its history and importance, The Little Rock is now protected. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. This helps make sure this special landmark is preserved for the future.
