The Lunch is an early painting by the famous Spanish artist Diego Velázquez. He finished it around the year 1617. This artwork is an oil painting on canvas and can be found at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.

What the Painting Shows

This painting shows three people sitting around a table. The table is covered with a cloth that has some wrinkles. On the table, you can see two pomegranate fruits and a piece of bread.

The People in the Painting

On the left side of the painting, there is an older man. On the right, there is a younger man who looks like he is smiling. He also seems to be giving a thumb signal, like saying "okay" or "good job." In the background, there is a boy who looks happy and is pouring wine into a jug.

Details on the Wall

If you look closely at the wall behind the people, you can spot a few things. There is a white neck-band hanging there. You can also see a leather bag. On the right side of the wall, a sword is hanging. These small details help tell a story about the people and their lives.

Similar Paintings by Velázquez

The Lunch is very much like another painting by Velázquez called The Farmers' Lunch. That painting was made in 1618, just a year after The Lunch. It's interesting to see how artists sometimes paint similar scenes.

Where You Can See It

This painting was shown to the public in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It was part of an exhibition called 'De Schatkamer!' at the Amsterdam Hermitage. You could see it there from February 2 to August 25, 2019.
