The Magic Walking Stick is an exciting adventure novel written in 1932 by a Scottish author named John Buchan. It's special because it's the only book he ever wrote just for kids! The very first version of the book had cool pictures drawn by John Morton Sale.
Story of the Magic Stick
The book tells the amazing adventures of a 13-year-old boy named Bill. He finds a magic walking stick. This stick has an incredible power! It can take Bill, and anyone he holds by the hand, to any place they wish to go.
Imagine going from sunny, white beaches in the Solomon Islands to cold, snowy valleys in the Scottish Highlands. Bill does just that! During his travels, he visits a mysterious place called an elephant's graveyard. He also plays a clever trick on some not-so-nice neighbors. Plus, he helps a young prince who is in trouble in a faraway country in the Balkans.
Bill hears an old story about two special staffs. He starts to wonder if his magic stick is one of them. These staffs are mentioned in an ancient book called the Book of Zechariah. One staff is called "Beauty," and it's about having fun. The other is "Bands," which is meant for serious and important tasks. Bill can't quite figure out if his stick is for fun or for serious missions!
About the Book
The Magic Walking Stick is the only children's novel written by John Buchan. It was first published in 1932 by a company called Hodder & Stoughton. The first edition of the book had illustrations by John Morton Sale.
The idea for the story came from a game that John Buchan used to play with his own children. A shorter version of the story was even included in a collection of short stories called Sails of Gold in 1927.
