Mall History: How It Grew
The Mall at Green Hills first opened its doors in 1955. Back then, it was an open-air shopping area, like a long row of shops. Since then, it has changed a lot with many updates and new additions.
Becoming an Enclosed Mall
In the late 1960s, the mall started to change. A new store called Castner Knott opened. At the same time, a new enclosed part was built, making it more like the indoor malls we know today. Another big store, Cain-Sloan, also opened a separate building at one end of the mall. Cain-Sloan later became Dillard's in 1987. These were the first new locations for these stores outside of downtown Nashville.
Big Changes in the 1980s and 1990s
From the late 1980s to the early 1990s, the mall had its biggest expansion ever. The enclosed mall was connected to the Dillard's store. A new food court was also added next to Castner Knott. Many stores that used to have outside entrances moved inside the mall during this time.
Some restaurants also joined the mall. Carrabba's Italian Grill was one of them, though it later moved to another nearby shopping area. Later, other restaurants like Bronte Bistro, Panera Bread, and The Cheesecake Factory also opened. These restaurants could be entered from outside the mall.
New Additions in the 2000s
In 1998, a new area was built next to the mall. It included a health club and a large Regal Cinemas movie theater with 16 screens. Regal also tried an indoor amusement park called "FunScape," but it closed in 2000. That space was then turned into offices. The health club also closed in 2007 and became office space too.
The Castner Knott store changed names several times. It became Proffitt's, then Hecht's. In 2004, a brand new Hecht's store was built. This allowed the old Hecht's building to be torn down to make room for even more mall space. This new area opened in 2005. It brought back a popular bookstore, Davis-Kidd Booksellers, which had left the mall earlier. However, Davis-Kidd Booksellers closed in late 2010. Today, The Container Store is in that space. The Hecht's store became Macy's in 2006.
Recent Updates
In 2011, a brand new Nordstrom store opened. This was the first Nordstrom in Tennessee! It is located next to Dillard's, facing Abbott Martin Road. In 2018, Restoration Hardware moved into a large new store. This new store is about 57,000 square feet (5,300 m2) and even has a café inside.
Main Stores
The Mall at Green Hills has three main anchor stores. These are very large stores that help attract many shoppers to the mall.
