Deza is excited for summer tutoring with Mrs. Needham and Clarice. But then, the Great Depression begins. This economic crisis deeply affects Deza's hometown of Gary, Indiana. Her father loses his job and has to leave home to find work.
Deza's mother also loses her job. This means the Malone family loses their home. Before Deza's father can send for them, her mother decides to take Deza and her brother, Jimmie, to find him. They end up living in a temporary camp called a Hooverville outside Flint, Michigan.
As their difficult journey continues, Jimmie leaves the camp. He hopes to become a famous performer. Deza and her mother keep searching for her father. Later, Deza learns Jimmie is doing well in Detroit and goes to find him. Meanwhile, her father has an accident but recovers.

Christopher Paul Curtis was inspired to write The Mighty Miss Malone by his many fans. They often asked him to write a book with a girl as the main character. So, Curtis decided to focus on Deza Malone. She was a smaller character in his earlier book, Bud, Not Buddy.
