About The Mighty Miss Malone
What is the Story About?
Deza Malone's family lives by a special motto: "We are a family on a journey to a place called Wonderful." Deza is a very smart student. Her teachers believe she has a bright future ahead.
However, Deza's family faces many difficulties because they are very poor. They cannot afford important things like dental care. Despite these tough times, Deza has loving parents, a wonderful teacher named Mrs. Needham, and a great best friend, Clarice Anne Johnson.
Deza is excited for summer tutoring with Mrs. Needham and Clarice. But then, the Great Depression begins. This economic crisis deeply affects Deza's hometown of Gary, Indiana. Her father loses his job and has to leave home to find work.
Deza's mother also loses her job. This means the Malone family loses their home. Before Deza's father can send for them, her mother decides to take Deza and her brother, Jimmie, to find him. They end up living in a temporary camp called a Hooverville outside Flint, Michigan.
As their difficult journey continues, Jimmie leaves the camp. He hopes to become a famous performer. Deza and her mother keep searching for her father. Later, Deza learns Jimmie is doing well in Detroit and goes to find him. Meanwhile, her father has an accident but recovers.
How the Book Was Created
Christopher Paul Curtis was inspired to write The Mighty Miss Malone by his many fans. They often asked him to write a book with a girl as the main character. So, Curtis decided to focus on Deza Malone. She was a smaller character in his earlier book, Bud, Not Buddy.
Curtis wanted this new book to explain how Deza's family became homeless in Flint, Michigan. This happens just before the events that take place in Bud, Not Buddy. It helps readers understand Deza's background better.
Important Ideas in the Story
The Mighty Miss Malone explores several important themes. These include what it was like to be homeless during the Great Depression. It also touches on issues of racism, the power of friendship, and strong family bonds. These themes show how people often faced challenges together.
As Deza tells her story, readers experience feelings of hardship, struggle, and disappointment. But through all these negative experiences, the book also highlights the theme of hope. Deza and her mother never give up hope that their family will be reunited.
The story skillfully weaves in details from the time period. For example, the famous boxing match between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling is mentioned. This event helps show the struggles and feelings of many African Americans during the Depression. Critics have noted that the book bravely shows the difficulties of poverty. However, it also offers a message of hope by the end of the story.
