What's the Story About?
Whisper's Big Challenge
The main character is 13-year-old Whisper Nelson. She really doesn't like sports. This is because when she was in third grade, she accidentally kicked the soccer ball into her own team's net during a game. This is called an own goal, and it made her feel pretty bad about sports ever since. This happened on a field near Lake Overholser.
The Million Dollar Contest
Later, a big contest comes up. The winner gets a chance to kick a soccer ball for one million dollars! The goal is to score against a very famous goalie named Carmen Applegate. Whisper's younger sister is too young to enter, so Whisper decides to sign up instead.
Winning the Ad Contest
To win the contest, people had to create the best advertisement for "The Kick." This is Oklahoma City's local soccer team. Whisper's ad, which said 'The Kick Kick Butt,' was chosen as the winner! This meant she got the amazing chance to try for the million dollars.
Getting Ready for the Kick
After winning, Whisper meets a person named Ellie. Ellie becomes Whisper's coach and helps her get ready for the big day. Whisper's story about winning the ad contest even made it onto the news and into the newspaper! Everyone was excited to see if she could score the million-dollar kick.
