Story Summary
Camping Adventures
Elizabeth Allen is in the first year at Whyteleafe School. She is staying at a school camp with her best friend, Joan Townsend. Joan is in the second year. Elizabeth's rival, Arabella Buckley, is also at the camp.
On the first night, Arabella finds her sleeping bag full of rubbish. She demands that whoever did it clean it out. The bag must then dry completely in the sun.
Nighttime Troubles
Joan suddenly remembers she needs new batteries for her flashlight. She thinks Teeny might wake up in the night. Joan mixes up the camp schedule times. Miss Ranger scolds her when she returns.
Later that night, Elizabeth sees the flashlight left on. She thinks Joan was careless. About an hour later, the tent door is wide open. Everyone gets very cold!
At the next meeting, Arabella complains about the open tent door. Everyone almost froze. Joan is then given a lighter sleeping bag.
Teeny's Mishaps
A girl named Teeny goes exploring on her own. She climbs a tree and falls out. Her glasses get broken in the fall.
That evening, Joan tells Elizabeth a secret. She is afraid of the dark. This was why she needed the flashlight batteries. It was also why the tent door was left open.
Elizabeth starts to understand things better. She realizes the problems are not all Teeny's fault. For example, Teeny climbed the tree. But if Joan had slept well, she might have stopped Teeny.
New Campsite and Discoveries
Elizabeth and Joan look for a better campsite. They accidentally disturb Miss Ranger. Arabella investigates what is happening. Elizabeth says she must have been sleepwalking.
Arabella scoffs at this idea. "Sleepwalking? She's wearing a dressing gown!" Arabella also points out Joan took her eyes off Teeny. This led to Teeny falling and breaking her glasses. Arabella is then made tent monitor instead of Joan.
The next day, Arabella gets tired of Teeny. She goes to get more clothes. Teeny sneaks off by herself. She ends up trapped in a drain.
A Rescue and a New Club
Joan bravely rescues Teeny, even though she is afraid of the dark. At the next meeting, William and Rita share Teeny's story. They explain that two children, Kitty and Duncan, had been daring Teeny to do things. These dares were hurting Teeny's confidence.
William and Rita say the dares must stop. They suggest the club should change. It should no longer be a "Dare club." Instead, it should become a "Friendship club."
