Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The New International Encyclopedia was a big set of books from America that helped people learn new things. It was first published in 1902 by a company called Dodd, Mead and Company. This encyclopedia was actually an updated version of an older one called the International Cyclopaedia from 1884. It was updated several times over the years, in 1906, 1914, and 1926, to keep the information fresh and new.

The Story of the Encyclopedia

The New International Encyclopedia grew out of an earlier set of books called the International Cyclopaedia (first published in 1884). The International Cyclopaedia itself was mostly a copy of an older British encyclopedia called Chambers's Encyclopaedia.

How the Encyclopedia Grew

The name changed to The New International Encyclopedia in 1902. Important editors like Harry Thurston Peck, Daniel Coit Gilman, and Frank Moore Colby helped create it.

This encyclopedia became very popular! Because so many people liked it, new copies were printed in 1904, 1905, 1907, 1909, and 1911. The 1907 version was even bigger, with 20 volumes instead of the original number.

New Editions and Updates

A second edition came out between 1914 and 1917. This version had 24 volumes. By this time, two of the original editors, Peck and Gilman, had passed away. So, Frank Moore Colby worked with a new editor named Talcott Williams. This second edition was completely rewritten and checked. It was especially good at providing information about people's lives, known as biographies.

A third edition was published in 1923. This one was mostly a reprint of the second edition. However, it added a special section about the First World War in its 24th volume.

Later Years and Supplements

Later, in 1925, two extra volumes were added as a "supplement." These new volumes were included in the 1927 reprint, which then had 25 volumes. Another two-volume supplement came out in 1930, along with another reprint of the main encyclopedia.

The very last edition of The New International Encyclopedia was published in 1935. A different company, Funk & Wagnalls, published this final version. It included an updated supplement written by Herbert Treadwell Wade. Some of the information from The New International was later used in other books published by Funk & Wagnalls, like the Funk & Wagnalls Standard Encyclopaedia.

Who Wrote It?

More than 500 people, both men and women, worked together to write and organize all the information in The New International Encyclopedia.

The Yearly Book

Like many encyclopedias of its time, The New International Encyclopedia also had a yearly companion book. This book was called The New International Yearbook and it started in 1908. This yearbook also changed hands and was sold to Funk & Wagnalls in 1931. Frank Moore Colby edited it until he passed away in 1925, and then Herbert Treadwell Wade took over. Later, in 1937, Frank Horace Vizetelly became the editor. The yearbook continued to be published for a long time, even after the main encyclopedia stopped, running until 1966.
