Frank Moore Colby (born February 10, 1865 – died March 3, 1925) was an American teacher and writer. He was known for his work on encyclopedias and for writing several books.

Life and Career

Frank Moore Colby was born in Washington, D. C.. He studied at Columbia University and graduated in 1888.

After college, he became a teacher. He taught history at Amherst College from 1890 to 1891. Later, he taught history and economics at Columbia University and Barnard College from 1891 to 1895. He then became a professor of economics at New York University until 1900.

Working on Encyclopedias

Colby also had a big role in creating encyclopedias. From 1893 to 1895, he worked on Johnson's Universal Cyclopaedia. He helped write about history and political science for this large book.

In 1898, he became an editor for the International Year Book. He also helped edit the International Cyclopedia. This encyclopedia was later renamed the New International Encyclopedia. Frank Moore Colby was a key editor for its first edition in 1902 and its second edition in 1914.

Other Writings

Besides his work on encyclopedias, Colby wrote many other things. He wrote for the New York Commercial Advertiser newspaper from 1900 to 1902. He also wrote a regular column called "The Book of the Month" for the North American Review starting in 1913. He wrote critical articles for magazines like The Bookman too.
