The Nursery "Alice" is a special, shorter version of the famous book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It was written by the same author, Lewis Carroll, especially for very young children, from babies up to five years old. This book came out in 1890, about 25 years after the original Alice story.

The book includes 20 pictures by John Tenniel, who also drew the original illustrations. For The Nursery "Alice", he redrew these pictures to make them bigger, brighter, and in color. He even changed some of them a little bit! The covers were designed by E. Gertrude Thomson, a friend of Lewis Carroll.

What Makes This Book Special?

This book is more than just a shorter version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It's written as if someone is reading the story aloud to a child. The author often talks directly to the child listener.

Talking to the Reader

Lewis Carroll adds little comments and questions throughout the story. He might point out details in the pictures or ask the child what they think. For example, he asks: "Which would you have liked the best, do you think, to be a little tiny Alice, no larger than a kitten, or a great tall Alice, with your head always knocking against the ceiling?"

Fun Additions

The book also includes new parts that weren't in the original story. You might find a short, fun story about a puppy named Dash. There's also an explanation of words like "foxglove" to help young readers understand.
