A Look Back in Time: The Barracks' Story
Building the Barracks
The Old Barracks was finished in 1855. It was built in a style called Italianate architecture. This style often includes features like wide eaves (the parts of the roof that hang over the walls) and tall, narrow windows. The building was made to be a home for the North Staffordshire Militia. A militia is a group of citizens who are trained as soldiers but are not part of the regular army.
Who Used the Barracks?
When it first opened, the barracks was used by a group called G Company. They were part of the 2nd Staffordshire Rifle Volunteer Corps. These were people who volunteered to serve as soldiers. Over time, this group changed names several times. They became The King's Own (3rd Staffordshire) Rifles Militia. Later, in 1881, they were renamed the 4th (Militia) Battalion.
In 1882, a person named Major W. H. Dalton bought the building. He made sure it would continue to be used for military purposes. The soldiers who used the barracks changed again in 1908. They became G Company of the 5th Battalion of the North Staffordshire Regiment.
From Soldiers to Workshops
The Old Barracks continued to be used by army groups. These groups were part of the Territorial Army. This is a part-time army for people who have other jobs. The building was used by these units until after the Second World War.
After the 1950s, the building found a new purpose. It was no longer used by soldiers. Instead, a company called Remploy started using it. Remploy is a company that provides workshops and jobs for people with disabilities. So, the Old Barracks became a place where people could work and learn new skills.
