The first edition of The Parent's Assistant came out in 1796. It had five stories for children. These included "Lazy Lawrence," "Tarlton," and "The Little Dog Trusty." Other stories were "The Orange Man" and "The False Key."

Later in the same year, a new story called "Barring Out" was added. Over time, even more stories joined the collection. One very well-known story added later was "The Purple Jar." A children's play called Old Poz also became part of the book.

By 1865, an American version of the book had many more tales. Some of these were "Simple Susan," "The Bracelets," and "The Little Merchants." It also featured "Waste Not, Want Not" and "Forgive and Forget." These stories taught important lessons in a fun way.
