History of The Park Shelton
Building a New Hotel
The Wardell hotel was designed by architects Weston and Ellington from Detroit. It was built in 1926 by a company called Bryant and Detwiler. This hotel was special because it was a "residential hotel." This meant people could stay there for a long time, not just for a few nights.
The building also features beautiful stone carvings, known as architectural sculptures. These were created by a famous artist named Corrado Parducci. The hotel was named after Fred Wardell, who owned the Eureka Vacuum Cleaner Company.
Famous Guests and New Names
Many interesting people stayed at The Wardell. For example, the famous artist Diego Rivera and his wife, Frida Kahlo, lived there. They were in Detroit while Rivera was painting his amazing murals at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
In 1943, the hotel was sold to the Sheraton company. Its name changed several times: first to the Wardell-Sheraton Hotel, then the Sheraton Hotel, and finally the Park Sheraton Hotel in 1951.
Becoming The Park Shelton
In 1952, a new owner named Louis Schleiffer bought the hotel. He could no longer use the Sheraton name. So, he made a small change to the spelling and renamed it The Park Shelton.
This hotel became a favorite spot for many celebrities. Famous entertainers like Bob Hope, George Burns, Gracie Allen, and Raymond Burr all chose to stay there.
From Hotel to Homes
In the 1970s, The Park Shelton Hotel changed again. It was converted into apartments, offering long-term housing for people.
Then, in 2004, the building was updated once more. It was turned into condominiums, which are individual homes owned by different people within a larger building. This project created 227 luxury homes. The newly renovated Park Shelton opened its doors in August 2004.
