Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Peasant in Heaven is a German fairy tale. It was collected by the famous Brothers Grimm and is found in their book Grimm's Fairy Tales as story number 167. This tale teaches us about how people are seen in Heaven, especially focusing on the difference between a rich person and a poor person.

What's the Story About?

The story begins when a poor farmer, called a Peasant, and a very wealthy man both arrive at the gates of Heaven. Saint Peter, who guards the entrance, lets the rich man in first. When the rich man enters, there is a huge celebration inside Heaven. Music plays, and everyone rejoices loudly.

After a while, Saint Peter notices the Peasant waiting patiently. He then lets the Peasant into Heaven. But this time, there is no celebration, no music, and no loud cheers. The Peasant is quite surprised by this difference.

Why Was There No Party?

The Peasant asks Saint Peter why the rich man received such a grand welcome, but he did not. Saint Peter explains that many poor people come to Heaven every day. It is quite common for them to enter. However, a rich person only arrives in Heaven about once every hundred years! Because it is such a rare event for a rich person to make it to Heaven, they get a special, big party.

This short story suggests that it might be harder for rich people to enter Heaven than for poor people. It makes you think about what is truly important in life and what God values.
