The Prince's Dream is a fable (a story with a moral lesson) written by Jean Ingelow. It is part of her book called The Wonderbox Tales. The story is about a prince who lives in a fancy tower in India. He has everything he could ever want, but he has never seen the world outside. One night, an old man visits him in a dream. This dream shows the prince what the 'real world' is like. It helps him understand what is truly important in life and how to be a good person.

What Is the Story About?

A Prince in a Tower

A young prince grows up inside a huge tower. He has been there since he was a baby. His life is full of luxury and expensive things. He has many servants and friends, but he has never left the tower. The prince learns about the world only from stories. His servants tell him these tales, and they are often replaced.

Learning About the Outside World

The prince thinks he knows everything about the world from these stories. But then, a new old man comes to the tower. This old man starts talking about what is really happening outside. He explains what "gold" means and what true wealth is.

At first, the prince only thinks about how important gold and fancy things are. This is because he has always lived with luxury.

The Dream and Its Lesson

Later, the prince has a special dream. In this dream, he learns that gold and luxuries are not as important as hard work, kindness, and caring for others. He sees people in his dream who are hurt by being too greedy.

When the prince wakes up, he finally understands. He realizes that putting too much importance on material things can be dangerous. After he understands this, the old man disappears. The prince is left with a new, humble way of looking at the world.
