The Queen's Foundation for Ecumenical Theological Education is a special college in Birmingham, England. It is also known as the Queen's Foundation, Birmingham. This college helps people train to become ministers or leaders in different Christian churches. It works closely with the Church of England and the Methodist Church. This means its courses teach about working together across different Christian groups.

What is the Queen's Foundation?

The Queen's Foundation is made up of several important parts. These parts help with different kinds of learning and training.

  • Centre for Ministerial Formation: This is where people train to become ministers.
  • Queen's Graduate and Research Centre: This part is for students who want to do advanced studies. They can earn master's or doctoral degrees.
  • Centre for Black Ministries and Leadership: This centre focuses on training and supporting Black church leaders.
  • Selly Oak Centre for Mission Studies: This centre teaches about Christian mission work around the world.

For a long time, the Queen's Foundation worked with the University of Birmingham. Students could earn degrees from that university. However, in 2009-2010, things changed. The University of Birmingham ended its agreement with Queen's.

Now, Queen's Foundation works with other universities. Students can earn degrees from Newman University. They can also get research degrees from the University of Gloucestershire. This allows students to study topics like applied theology. They can also do research for higher degrees like a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) or a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).

The main buildings at Queen's Foundation are quite old. The residential block and lodge were built in 1929-1930. The chapel was built a bit later, from 1938 to 1947. These buildings were designed by a local architect named Holland W. Hobbiss. The chapel is special because its altar was one of the first in England built for the priest to face the people during services.

The college also used to host a special summer school. This was for the UKMT Mathematics Summer School. About 40 students would come each summer to learn more about maths.

How the College Started

Queen's College, Paradise Street, Birmingham
The original Queen's College in Paradise Street, Central Birmingham

The college began a long time ago, in 1828. It was first called Queen's College. It was located on Paradise Street in central Birmingham. At first, it was a medical school. It taught many different subjects, not just medicine.

Over time, the parts of the college that were not about theology joined another college. This was the Mason Science College. That college later became the University of Birmingham in 1900. After this, Queen's College became only a theological school. It moved to its current location on Somerset Road in 1923.

The Selly Oak Centre for Mission Studies is a newer part of the Foundation. It was created in 2006. It took over from another college called the United College of the Ascension. This centre is supported by two groups. These are the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel and the Methodist Church.
