What Is The Ridiculous Wishes About?
This tale tells the story of a poor woodcutter who was not happy with his life. One day, a powerful being, either the Roman god Jupiter or a magical tree spirit, appeared to him. This being offered the woodcutter a very special gift: three wishes!
The Woodcutter's Silly Wishes
The woodcutter hurried home to tell his wife the amazing news. She wisely suggested they wait until the next day to make their wishes. This would give them time to think carefully about what they truly wanted.
However, later that evening, while sitting by the warm fire, the woodcutter made a very silly mistake. Without thinking, he blurted out his first wish: he wished for a long string of sausages!
His wife was very upset by his foolish wish. She scolded him for wasting such a precious gift on something so simple. In his anger, the woodcutter made an even worse mistake. He wished the sausages would stick right onto his wife's nose!
How Did They Solve Their Problem?
With two wishes already used up in such a silly way, the woodcutter and his wife had only one wish left. They realized they had to use it to fix their big problem. So, they agreed to use their last wish to remove the sausages from her nose.
In the end, they were left with no wishes and were no better off than before. Well, except for having a string of sausages!
Different Versions of the Story
In some versions of this old tale, instead of sausages, the characters wish for "black pudding." This is another type of food, similar to a sausage, which makes the story just as funny and teaches the same lesson.
