The Road to Agra (which means Veien til Agra in Norwegian) is an exciting children's novel. It was written by Aimée Sommerfelt and first came out in Norwegian in 1959. This book is her most famous work. It has been translated into 17 different languages around the world.
The story takes place in India. It follows the amazing journey of two siblings, 13-year-old Lalu and his younger sister, Maya, who is 7.

The Story of Lalu and Maya
The book tells the brave story of Lalu and Maya. They are traveling from their home near Allahabad to the city of Agra. Their goal is to find doctors who can help Maya. She has a serious eye disease that is making her go blind.
A Difficult Journey
Their trip to Agra is long and hard. The roads are very dusty, and the weather is hot. The children get very tired from walking so far. At night, they face dangers like snakes and jackals. But Lalu and Maya never give up hope. They have heard that the hospital in Agra can cure Maya's illness.
New Friends and Challenges
Along their journey, Lalu and Maya meet many different people. Some are kind and offer help, while others are not so friendly. They even get to ride on an elephant, which is a big adventure! Through all the challenges, the children stick together. They show great courage and determination.
Reaching Their Goal
Finally, after a long and difficult journey, Lalu and Maya reach Agra. They find the hospital, and European doctors are able to treat Maya. She is cured of her eye disease, and her sight is saved! The book shows how strong a brother and sister's bond can be. It also teaches about hope and never giving up.
The Sequel
The story of Lalu and Maya continues in another book. A sequel called The White Bungalow was published in 1962. It came out in English in 1963.
