Story Overview

Joseph's Journey

The story is about Joseph Davidson, a quiet 14-year-old boy. Joseph is a very talented artist. His life takes an interesting turn when he gets a special request. He is asked to draw a portrait of his mysterious neighbor, Tom Leyton.

The Mysterious Neighbor

Tom Leyton is a Vietnam veteran. For 30 years, he has lived a quiet life with his sister Caroline. He spends his time raising silkworms. Tom prefers to stay hidden from others. Because of this, people in the neighborhood spread rumors about him. One neighbor, Mrs. Mossop, is especially suspicious of Tom.

Unlocking Secrets

When Joseph finally meets Tom, he finds a very quiet man. Tom seems to be lost in his own thoughts. Joseph soon realizes that to truly draw Tom, he needs to understand him better. This means finding the courage to learn about Tom's past.

Joseph's Own Challenges

Joseph also has his own personal challenges. He feels sad about his relationship with his father, who is not around. He also has a childhood fear of the "Running Man." This was a local person who looked wild and moved very fast. The Running Man used to scare Joseph when he was little. These old fears start to come back as Joseph tries to understand Tom Leyton.

Facing Fears

As Joseph learns more about his neighbor, he faces not only Tom Leyton's difficult past. He also confronts his own feelings about his father. And he finally comes to terms with his fear of the "Running Man."
