The Princess and Her Stepmother

Life with a Cruel Stepmother

Once, there was a king and queen who had a daughter. Sadly, the queen passed away, and the king married again. His new wife, the stepmother, was very unkind to the princess. She made the princess work hard, sending her to look after the sheep. The stepmother also gave her very little food, hoping she would not survive.

The Mysterious Helper

Despite the lack of food, the princess managed to stay healthy. This was because a special, sharp-horned grey sheep secretly helped her. The sheep would bring her food, making sure she had enough to eat.

The Secret of the Grey Sheep

A Clever Plan to Spy

The stepmother was puzzled. She knew the princess wasn't getting enough food from her, so she wondered how she was surviving. The stepmother went to a wise old henwife for advice. The henwife suggested sending her own daughter to spy on the princess.

Uncovering the Truth

The henwife's daughter went with the princess to watch the sheep. The princess, being clever, offered to style the henwife's daughter's hair. As she worked, the henwife's daughter fell asleep. While she slept, the grey sheep came and helped the princess with food. However, the henwife's daughter had a secret eye on the back of her head that stayed awake. Through this eye, she saw everything and later told her mother the truth.

The Sheep's Last Wish

A Promise Kept

When the stepmother learned about the helpful sheep, she was furious. She immediately ordered the sheep to be killed. Before it was killed, the kind sheep spoke to the princess. It told her to gather all its bones and hooves and wrap them carefully in its hide. The sheep promised that if she did this, it would return to help her again. The princess followed the instructions, but in her sadness, she accidentally forgot to collect the very small hooves. Because of this, when the sheep returned, it was a little lame, but it still continued to provide food for the princess.

A Prince's Quest for Love

Meeting the Prince

One day, a prince saw the princess and was very impressed by her. He asked about her, and word of his interest soon reached the henwife's daughter. She quickly told her mother, who then warned the queen. The queen, wanting her own daughter to have a chance with the prince, brought the princess back home to do housework. She then sent her own daughter out to tend the sheep instead.

The Golden Slipper Challenge

One day, the princess was outside when the prince gave her a beautiful pair of golden boots. He hoped she would wear them to church so he could see her there. However, her stepmother would not allow her to go. So, the princess went secretly. She sat where the prince could easily see her, but she left quickly before her stepmother could spot her. As she hurried away, she lost one of her golden shoes in the mud. The prince found the shoe and declared that he would marry the person whose foot fit the golden slipper perfectly.

Finding the True Princess

The queen tried everything to make her own daughter's foot fit the shoe. She even tried to force her foot into it. But a little bird saw what was happening and sang a song to the prince, pointing out that the shoe did not truly fit. The prince continued his search and finally found the princess. When she tried on the golden slipper, it fit perfectly. The prince was overjoyed and married her, and they lived happily ever after.
