The Snow Maiden (Russian: Снегу́рочка; tr.:Snegurochka) is a 1952 animated movie from the Soviet Union. It was made at the Soyuzmultfilm studio in Moscow. The film is based on an old Slavic play by Aleksandr Ostrovsky. This play itself was inspired by traditional folk tales. The movie uses music from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's opera, also called The Snow Maiden. This music was specially arranged for the film.

This animated film was shown in movie theaters. It is now considered to be in the public domain in Russia. This means it can be freely shared and used. It also became public domain in the United States, but its copyright was later restored.

How was The Snow Maiden made?

In the early 1950s, the Soyuzmultfilm studio made many famous "classical" animated movies. These were often for children. They sometimes used a technique called "eclair" or rotoscoping. This is where animators trace over live-action film frames.

The Snow Maiden was one of these well-known films from 1952. An artist named V. A. Nikitin added a special touch to the movie. He used glowing paints, which was a new and exciting idea at the time.

Where can you watch The Snow Maiden?

The Snow Maiden has been available to watch for many years. In the 1980s, it was released on video tapes. Later, in the 1990s, it was published on VHS tapes as part of collections of Soviet animated films.

Since the early 2000s, the film has been restored. This means its picture and sound were improved. It was then released on DVD.
