The Snow Queen is a famous fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen. It was first published on December 21, 1844. This story appeared in a collection called New Fairy Tales. It is one of Andersen's longest tales, divided into seven parts or chapters.
The story begins with a magical mirror. This mirror was made by evil demons. It shatters into many pieces. A tiny piece of this glass gets into the eye and heart of a little boy named Kai. This makes his heart cold and his vision distorted. The powerful Snow Queen then takes Kai away to her palace far in the north. His brave friend, Gerda, goes on a long journey to find him. She eventually rescues Kai. His vision and his heart are then made normal again. This classic story has been made into many movies and television shows. It also appears in the book The Land of Stories: The Enchantress Returns.

Stories Inspired by The Snow Queen
Many other stories and films have been inspired by "The Snow Queen." One of the most well-known is Walt Disney Animation Studios' movie Frozen.
How Frozen Connects to the Fairy Tale
The film Frozen takes ideas from "The Snow Queen." However, the movie's plot is quite different from Andersen's original fairy tale. For example, in Frozen, the Snow Queen character, Elsa, is not evil. She is a princess with ice powers. The story focuses on the love between two sisters.
