The Tetley was a cool modern art art gallery in Leeds, England. It was located in the amazing art deco building that used to be the main office for the famous Tetley's Brewery. The gallery first opened its doors on November 28, 2013, and welcomed visitors until it closed on December 17, 2023. The charity that ran The Tetley, originally called Project Space Leeds, is now known as Yorkshire Contemporary and continues to support art in the region.

The Story Behind The Tetley
The opening of The Tetley was part of a huge project to redevelop the old Tetley Brewery site. The brewery's owners, Carlsberg-Tetley, stopped making beer there in 2011. They tore down most of the buildings, but they kept the beautiful headquarters building.
This special building was saved to be used for offices and, starting in 2013, to house an art charity called Project Space Leeds. When the charity moved in, it started operating as 'The Tetley'. The goal was for The Tetley to become a major art center in Leeds, similar to places like the Cornerhouse in Manchester or the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead.
The co-directors of Project Space Leeds, Pippa Hale and Kerry Harker, along with Chris Walker, managed the renovation of the building. They received some funding from the Arts Council England to help make it happen.
In January 2016, Bryony Bond, who used to be a curator at the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, became the new Creative Director of The Tetley.
The Tetley art space had a lease for the building until 2023. After the gallery closed, a new plan for the area called Aire Park began. This plan includes a large public park and other developments around The Tetley building.
In March 2024, Aire Park announced that Kirkstall Brewery took over the building. Kirkstall Brewery plans to bring back the building's history as an important place for "Yorkshire beer culture."
The art charity, now called Yorkshire Contemporary, no longer uses The Tetley building. Since May 2024, it has been working on art projects in different locations across the region while looking for a new permanent home.
Art Programs and Support
The Tetley was an important organization supported by Arts Council England. This meant it received funding and recognition for its role in bringing art to the public.
Exciting Exhibitions
The Tetley hosted many interesting art shows. These exhibitions often featured new and exciting artists.
Early Exhibitions (2013-2016)
The very first exhibitions at The Tetley were part of a series called 'A New Reality' (November 29, 2013, to July 1, 2014). Artists like James Clarkson, Emma Rushton, and Rehana Zaman created art that explored the history and unique spaces of the new building.
In 2015, an exhibition called 'Painting in Time' showcased modern painting and how it connects with other art forms. This show included works by famous artists such as Yoko Ono.
In 2016, The Tetley presented a solo exhibition by London-based sculptor Jonathan Trayte. His show, 'Polyculture', featured sculptures of vegetables and fruits made from ceramic and other materials.
