About The Thanksgiving Story Book
This book shares the history of the first Thanksgiving. It focuses on the journey and experiences of the Hopkins family. They were passengers on the famous ship, the Mayflower. The story is told through the eyes of three children from this family. These children were part of a group called the Puritans.
The Journey and First Year
The story begins with the Hopkins children: Giles, Constance, and Damaris. They are traveling with their parents on the Mayflower. Their goal is to start a new life in a place called the New World. During their long trip, a new baby brother is born on the ship. They name him Oceanus.
When they finally arrive, the group, known as the Pilgrims, faces many challenges. They struggle with hunger, cold weather, and sickness. They go through a very difficult winter in Plymouth.
Help from Native Americans
When spring arrives, things start to get better. The settlers learn how to plant crops. They get important help from two Native Americans. Their names are Samoset and Squanto. Thanks to their help, the Pilgrims are able to survive their first year.
The First Thanksgiving Feast
The book ends with a big celebration. This celebration is a great feast. The Pilgrims invite the Native American chief Massasoit. They also invite Squanto and his people. These Native Americans had helped the Pilgrims survive. They taught them how to find food and live in the new land. This feast is what we now call the first Thanksgiving.
