The Story of Eddie Wing
The book is about a young boy named Eddie Wing. Eddie absolutely loves kites more than anything! His parents own a flower shop. However, they don't have enough money to buy him supplies to make a real kite.
All the other kids on Eddie's street are also not rich. So, when Eddie pretends to fly an imaginary kite, they all join in. They play along and have fun together.
Every year, the town where Eddie lives holds a special event. It's called the Festival of Kites. This festival is Eddie's favorite day of the year!
An important man named Old Chan offers a prize at the festival each year. Chan is the richest person in town. Everyone looks up to him, especially Eddie.
Old Chan always wanted to be a poet. But he was too busy working in his family's restaurant. He didn't have time to write poems. Now that he is older, he can sit outside his restaurant. He spends his time making up new poems.
For this year's Kite Festival, Old Chan decided something different. The winner would be the person with the smallest kite.
Eddie didn't have money to make even a tiny kite. So, he couldn't enter the contest. But he still went to the festival. He flew his imaginary kite, pretending it was real.
Old Chan saw Eddie flying his imaginary kite. He didn't pick Eddie as the winner right away. Instead, he took Eddie back to his restaurant. There, he gave Eddie a special package. It was full of materials to make his very own dream kite!
Eddie used the materials to make a beautiful kite. He flew it from the tallest hill in town. And finally, Old Chan wrote down a poem. It was a poem about a young boy flying a tiny kite of dreams.
