The Wishing-Chair is a super fun series of three books by the famous English author Enid Blyton. The first two books are full novels. The third book is a collection of shorter stories. These exciting children's stories are all about magic and adventure.

Here are the books in the series:

  • Adventures of the Wishing-Chair, published in 1937. Hilda McGavin drew the pictures.
  • The Wishing-Chair Again, published in 1950. Hilda McGavin also drew the pictures for this one.
  • More Wishing-Chair Stories, published in 2000. Anthony Lewis was the illustrator for this book.

The first book, Adventures of the Wishing-Chair, was Enid Blyton's very first full-length novel. Even though it's a novel, it's made up of many smaller adventures. A TV show based on these books was made in 1998.

Adventures of the Wishing-Chair: The First Book

In this first book, two children named Mollie and Peter are looking for a birthday gift for their mom. They find a mysterious old shop. It seems to be run by magical fairy folk! Inside, they discover a special Wishing-Chair. This chair can grow wings and fly through the air.

The chair saves them from the shop and takes them home. Mollie and Peter decide to keep the chair in their playroom. On their very first adventure, they rescue a tiny pixie named Chinky from a giant. Chinky comes to live with them. The rest of the book tells about all the amazing places the chair takes the children and Chinky.

The Wishing-Chair Again: More Adventures

It's the start of summer holidays, and Peter and Mollie can't wait for more adventures. They want to fly with their Wishing-Chair again! Peter accidentally wishes to go to a place called "Goodness-Knows-Where." On their way, the Wishing-Chair gets stolen. Luckily, they manage to get it back.

A few days later, the chair only grows three wings instead of four. They end up in the Land of Slipperies. Peter accidentally upsets one of the Slipperies. As a result, the Slipperies chop off all the chair's wings! The children find a special ointment that helps the wings grow back.

On a rainy day, they accidentally make their toys grow wings. The toys fly off to Mr. Grim's school. This school is where naughty brownies are sent. Mollie and Peter become friends with a brownie named Winks. They successfully convince Mr. Grim to give their toys back. Winks then comes to live with Peter and Mollie. They take him on many adventures. But on the last day of the holidays, Winks has to go back to Mr. Grim's school because he was too naughty.

More Wishing-Chair Stories: New Tales

In this final book, Mollie and Peter are home for their half-term break. Winks and the Wishing-Chair are ready for new flights to magical lands. They visit the Land of Wishes, where anything they wish for can come true. They also go to the Land of Scally-Wags, a place full of mischievous characters. They even help Santa Claus deliver presents on Christmas Eve!

This book was published in 2000. It's a collection of different stories. Some of these stories were chapters removed from earlier books. Others came from magazines like Sunny Stories and other Enid Blyton collections.

The Wishing-Chair on TV

An animated TV show called Enid Blyton's Enchanted Lands was made in 1997 and 1998. This show was based on stories from both "The Wishing Chair" and "The Faraway Tree" series. Some of the episodes were later released on video and DVD. These included "The Ho Ho Wizard" and "The Land of Dreams." The voice actors for the show included Richard Pearce and Julia Harrison-Jones.
