The History of The Wood
Italian Settlers in The Wood
The Wood has a notable community with Italian roots. The very first Italian immigrants arrived in the 1860s. Many of them were fishermen. However, most Italian families moved to The Wood in the 20th century.
They chose The Wood because the land was perfect for growing plants and vegetables. This type of farming is called horticulture. The area rarely had frost, which helped plants grow well. Horticulture was a big part of life here until the 1990s. Then, it became too expensive to keep the gardens. Many of these garden lands were sold and turned into new homes.
