Thembekile Kimi Makwetu was an important South African leader who worked to make sure the government spent money wisely. He was known as the Auditor-General of South Africa from 2013 until he passed away in 2020. His job was to check how government departments and public organizations used their money. Early Life and Learning

Kimi Makwetu was born in Cape Town, South Africa, on January 7, 1966. He finished high school in 1984 at St Johns College. Later, he went to the University of Cape Town and earned a degree in Social Sciences in 1989. He continued his studies at the University of Natal, where he got another degree in 1997. After this, he became a qualified chartered accountant. This means he was an expert in managing and checking financial records.

His Career Journey

Kimi Makwetu started his career working for different companies. He worked at places like Standard Bank and Nampak. He also trained at a big accounting firm called Deloitte. Later, he joined Metropolitan Life and Liberty Life, where he gained more experience. He even became a director in Deloitte's special unit that investigates financial issues.

Becoming Auditor-General

In 2007, Kimi Makwetu joined the Auditor-General's office as the Deputy Auditor-General. This was a big step in his career. On December 1, 2013, the President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, chose him to be the main Auditor-General. He was appointed for a seven-year term.

As Auditor-General, Kimi Makwetu had a very important role. He had to check if government money was being spent correctly. In 2014, he pointed out that some government spending was "wasteful and irregular." This means money was not used in the best way. In a report in 2015, he noted that things had started to get a little better. He worked hard to make sure public money was used responsibly.

His Passing

Kimi Makwetu sadly passed away on November 11, 2020, due to lung cancer. His term as Auditor-General was almost finished. His deputy, Tsakani Maluleke, took over his important role.
