Theobald Taaffe was an important Irish leader who lived a long time ago, from about 1603 to 1677. He was known by several titles, like Viscount Taaffe and Baron of Ballymote. He was a loyal officer for the King during a big conflict called the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.
When the Irish Rebellion started in 1641, Taaffe, who was Catholic, stayed loyal to the government in Dublin. Later, he joined a group called the Irish Confederates. He became the leader of their army in the region of Munster. Taaffe believed in working together and wanted the Confederates to team up with the King's supporters in Ireland.
After the King's side lost in Ireland, Taaffe went into exile with King Charles II. When King Charles II returned to power, Taaffe was given the new title of the 1st Earl of Carlingford.

About Theobald Taaffe
Theobald was the oldest of fifteen children. His father was Sir John Taaffe, who was the 1st Viscount Taaffe. His mother was Anne Dillon. Theobald became the Viscount in 1642 after his father passed away.
Early Political Life
From 1639, Theobald Taaffe represented County Sligo in the Irish Parliament. He served there until he became a Viscount, which meant he moved to the House of Lords.
Leading the Munster Army
In 1647, Theobald Taaffe was chosen to lead the Irish army in Munster. This decision was made by Viscount Muskerry. Taaffe's time as a commander had some tough moments. He could not stop the town of Cashel from being attacked. Later that same year, his army was defeated at the Battle of Knocknanauss.
Two years later, Taaffe fought alongside Baron Inchiquin at the Battle of Arklow in 1649. This time, Inchiquin's side lost the battle.
Exile and Return
When the King's side was defeated in Ireland, Taaffe had to leave the country. He went into exile with King Charles II. He was listed as one of the main leaders of the King's forces in Ireland who would not be pardoned by the new government.
After King Charles II returned to power in 1660, Taaffe was rewarded for his loyalty. He was given the title of Earl of Carlingford.
Diplomatic Missions
Theobald Taaffe was sent on important missions to other European leaders. He traveled to meet the Duke of Lorraine and the Holy Roman Emperor. These trips helped create a special connection between his family and the powerful Habsburg and Lorraine families in Europe. This connection lasted for a very long time.
Family Life
Theobald Taaffe was married two times. His first wife was Mary Weld. They had a son named John Taaffe. John later married Lady Rose Lambart. Theobald's second wife was Anne Pershall, and they did not have any children together.
