Theodora Megale Komnene was an Empress of Trebizond. She ruled for a short time from 1284 to 1285. Trebizond was a country in what is now Turkey.

Theodora was the daughter of Emperor Manuel I of Trebizond. Her mother was a Georgian princess named Rusudan.

How Theodora Became Empress

In 1284, Theodora wanted to become the ruler of Trebizond. Her half-brother, John II, was the emperor at that time.

Theodora got help from the King of Imereti, David VI Narin, who was from Georgia. With this help, she was able to take the crown from John II.

John II may have gone to a place called Tripolis to be safe.

Her Short Reign

Theodora's time as Empress did not last long. Soon after she took the throne, her half-brother John II fought back.

John II defeated Theodora and became emperor again. Even though her reign was short, Theodora did something special. She was the only Empress of Trebizond to have her own coins made.

These coins were made of silver and bronze. They show that she was truly in charge during her brief rule.

What Happened Next

After John II became emperor again, Theodora's story becomes a mystery. She left Trebizond in 1285.

Historians do not know what happened to her after that. She might have gone to live in Georgia, which was her mother's homeland.
