Theodric
King of Bernicia
Reign 572–579
Predecessor Æthelric
Successor Frithuwald
Father Ida of Bernicia

Theodric was a king who ruled the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Bernicia from about 572 to 579. He was the fifth known ruler of this kingdom.

Who Was Theodric?

Theodric was the son of Ida of Bernicia, who started the kingdom of Bernicia. He was also the brother of Æthelric, who was king before him.

Not much is known about Theodric's life or his time as king. However, there are some old stories about him.

The Siege of Lindisfarne

One story says that Urien, the king of Rheged, attacked Theodric and his sons. Urien's army surrounded them for three days on the island of Lindisfarne.

The Battle of Argoed Llwyfain

Theodric might be the same person as an Anglian ruler called Fflamddwyn in Welsh poems. These poems say that Fflamddwyn was killed in a battle called Gweith Argoed Llwyfain.

In this battle, Fflamddwyn demanded that his enemies give him hostages. But Owain mab Urien, who was Urien's son, refused. Owain then killed Fflamddwyn in the fight.

When Did Theodric Rule?

The exact dates for Theodric's rule are not completely certain. Different old records give different ideas about when he and other kings ruled. This makes it hard to know the precise order and years for kings between Ida's death and when Æthelfrith became king around 592 or 593.
