About the Crawford House
The Crawford House stands north of Putney Village. You can find it on Hickory Ridge Road. It is a large, two-and-a-half-story building. The house is made mostly of brick.
What the House Looks Like
The house has a roof that slopes down on two sides. Its foundation is made of strong granite. The front and side walls use a special brick pattern called Flemish bond. Other walls use a pattern called American bond.
A wooden part of the house extends from the back. This part has two stories and a sloped roof. The front of the house faces the street. It has a balanced look with a door in the middle.
The main entrance has windows on the sides. Above the door, there is a beautiful fan-shaped window. On the second floor, right above the door, is a Palladian window. This type of window has a tall center part and two shorter side parts. The other windows are rectangular. They have decorative half-oval shapes above them. Inside, many original wooden details and old hardware are still there.
History of the House
Theophilus Crawford built this house between 1807 and 1809. He was a local farmer and owned a sawmill. Mr. Crawford often traveled to Boston, Massachusetts. He went there to sell his dairy products.
It is said that he brought the window glass back from Boston. The bricks for the house likely came from a local brickyard. This brickyard was in East Putney.
A Special Brick Home
The Theophilus Crawford House was probably the first brick house built in Putney. It is also one of the first fancy Federal-style homes in southeastern Vermont. The house stayed in the Crawford family for a long time. They owned it until 1913. This was a very long time for one family to own a house back then. Since 1986, the house has been a bed and breakfast inn.
